Family and Friends of Addicts

How to Assist Someone in Recovery

Addiction affects the individual as well as their family, friends, coworkers, etc. When a problem is discovered, the first question of many is, “what can I do?” If you have a loved one beginning their journey in recovery, it is important to understand the process on which they are ready to embark. Understanding the process allows loved ones to offer compassion to the addicted individual, while also offering support along the way.

Another important way to assist a loved one is to understand the importance of getting help for all family members. The disease of addiction affects everyone involved; there can be feelings of guilt, shame, rejection, resentment, violence, financial trouble, etc. Dealing with these issues will only make it easier to begin and continue the healing process.

Therapy

Family therapy and addiction counseling is important for both the addicted individual and the family. Recovery is a time of change, and the engagement of a neutral party assists in the healing process for all parties. While addiction therapy/counseling is strongly encouraged for the addicted individual, the family also benefit, by becoming aware of their own needs in the healing process.
